Bandra Police arrested businessman, Pankaj Kumar, in connection with suicide charges after his 35-year-old maid died while jumping from a balcony on March 5. While the businessman and his wife were reserved, the former was detained and produced in the High Court on Saturday

Police had booked a couple for allegedly abetting the suicide of debt-ridden woman Sarita Toppo, who worked as a full-time housekeeper at a Bandra couple’s home in January, earning an initial salary of ₹11,000 and ₹15,000 after learning to cook in February. A month later, however, Sarita’s employer called the maid’s aunt and informed her that since Sarita was not equipped to work, she would drop her house and interrupt the work.

According to FIR, Sarita was very depressed and became alienated due to depression. Subsequently, on March 5, Sarita jumped from the fifth-floor house and committed suicide. She was found read by the caretaker, who alerted residents and Sarita was rushed to Bhabha Municipal Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An accidental death report was mostly filed, but another inquest found that the accused couple were responsible for Sarita’s extreme gait. Based on the investigation, a case of inciting suicide was registered against the Bandra-based couple. While Pankaj has been arrested, a new investigation is ongoing.
