Akihabara is Tokyo’s furthest otaku– oriented neighborhood, filled with electronics stores, video game retailers and anime specialty shops. The Otaku themselves, however, do not usually call the place “Akihabara”, instead opting for the abbreviation “Akiba”.
That’s something a new dental clinic opening in the neighborhood seems well aware of. It’s officially called Akiba Dental Clinic, and that’s not the only way to appeal to otaku tastes.
In listing what sets them apart from other dentists, Akiba Dental Clinic (or Akiba Shika, to use their full name in Japanese) mentions things like their convenient location and hours of operation. They are only a two minute walk from the station and are open until 11pm, even on weekends. But the list also includes:
● Greet patients in cute Akiba style uniforms
● You can practice brushing your teeth with your favorite staff member!
Akiba Dental Clinic is also keen to assure potential patients that this is indeed a real dentist’s office, and not some sort of cafe or dental-themed cosplay club. Joji Yukawa, owner of Akiba Dental Clinic, graduated from Matsumoto Dental University in Nagano Prefecture. The clinic offers treatments for cavities and periodontal disease, as well as dental implant, cleaning and whitening services.

The clinic begins operations in earnest in early July, but they held an open day, with a limited number of Polaroid photo opportunities with staff last week.
While one might cynically call the frilly outfits and fashionable makeup marketing ploys, they also seem to be part of the clinic’s effort to make the place patients will look forward to visiting, which doesn’t It’s no small feat for a dentist’s office. Akiba Dental Clinic also mentions several times on their website and Twitter account that they understand that some people are afraid to go to the dentist and may have been avoiding checkups or treatments for a long time, but everyone is welcome for a free consultation.
