Social media posts claim that US government employees and pharmaceutical company personnel are exempt from Covid-19 vaccination requirements. But President Joe Biden has issued an executive order ordering federal employees to get vaccinated, while drug companies also tell their staff to get vaccinated.

“Why are White House employees exempt from a vaccination mandate they require for the rest of us?” said on September 30, 2021 Tweeter which has been liked over 11,000 times. A screenshot of it also circulated on Facebook.

The claim spread online after Biden posted a Executive Decree September 9 requiring Covid-19 vaccination for more than 3.5 million federal workersincluding White House staffers.

“I have determined that to promote the health and safety of the federal workforce and the efficiency of the public service, it is necessary to require Covid-19 vaccination for all federal employees, subject to the exceptions required by law,” the order reads. .

Allowed exceptions vary across the United States, but all states and the District of Columbia allow a medical dispensation.

Broader claims

In addition to the executive order, Biden presented a plan require private employers of more than 100 workers to ensure they are vaccinated or tested weekly. the to reign How this will be enforced is being worked out by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

On October 12, OSHA submitted a draft Covid-19 Vaccination Emergency Temporary Standard in the Office of the Federal Register, but it is not yet published and enforceable. Once finalized, the rule will affect more than 80 million workers.

The president’s broader action led to additional messages circulating on instagram and Facebook in end of September and beginning of October. They say White House staff, many government employees and immigrants are exempt from the vaccine rule. But that’s incorrect.

Employees of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) are all federal employees and report to the presidential decree.

US Postal Service workers, although federal employees, are not currently covered by this requirement.

A September 16 statement on the USPS website says, “Because the Postal Service is an independent federal agency that operates under a private sector collective bargaining model, changes to working conditions are mandatory subjects of bargaining.” He says postal workers will have to negotiate around OSHA’s temporary emergency standard.

Congressional staff and the legislative branch of government are not covered by the executive order.

In August, Democratic lawmakers wrote to Dr. Brian Monahan, the Congressional Physician, asking him to introduce a vaccine requirement or minimum testing regulations, but such a rule is not currently in place.

The judicial branch of government also does not come under executive order.

An email statement from United States Courts Administrative Office said: “Decisions about vaccination and/or testing are made by individual courts based on a number of factors, including the health of the local community.”

Migrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are offered Covid-19 injections, the agency says pandemic response requirements. The guidelines state: “Although ICE cannot force people in detention to be vaccinated, all detention centers are responsible for ensuring that their ICE detainees are offered the Covid vaccine in accordance with priorities and guidelines. of State.”

But vaccine makers decided to require injections of Covid-19.

Pfizer said it requires all U.S. employees and contractors “to be fully vaccinated unless approved for a medical or religious accommodation against vaccination. For those with a medical or religious accommodation, a PCR test is required”.

AFP previously denied a false claim about the Pfizer CEO’s vaccination status. Albert Bourla received his second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on March 10.

Moderna also has a vaccination policy.

A declaration published on August 20 said, “Moderna will require Covid-19 vaccination for all workers in the United States, effective October 1, 2021. Requests for medical or religious exemptions will be considered on an individual basis. All workers in Moderna are still required to follow local health authority and Moderna health and safety protocols while on site.”

Similarly, Johnson & Johnson requires vaccination. A statement emailed from the company said: “To ensure that we take appropriate steps to create a safe work environment, employees and contractors on site in the United States and Puerto Rico must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, subject to legal requirements.

“Science proves that getting vaccinated is the single most important step in protecting ourselves and our communities.”
