Neera Tanden, an Indian-American political expert and close confidante of President Joe Biden, has been named White House staff secretary.

FREMONT, Calif.: Neera Tanden, an expert on Indo-American politics and a close confidante of President Joe Biden, has been named White House staff secretary eight months after Republicans rushed her to another key post. President Joe Biden’s 51-year-old senior adviser is being slated for the role which, while a behind-the-scenes job, is highly critical in the West Wing. Neera will be responsible for managing the flow of paper to President Biden regarding federal government administration and operations. The White House staff secretary is one of the most influential roles in the White House, and Neera will retain her title as senior adviser and begin leading specific projects and initiatives. She will report to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain.

The role of White House Staff Secretary is considered the nervous system of the White House as the titleholder makes all the decisions and handles multiple files for the US President. Neera Tanden has over twenty years of experience in policy development and management, which is the epitome of her new role. She’s a seasoned expert on domestic, economic and national security policy, and the White House staff secretary demands the same.

Eight months ago, Neera withdrew her nomination as director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) because she was fiercely opposed by Republican senators. In March 2021, Neera faced several challenges regarding her past outburst on social media against several lawmakers, including some from her own Democratic Party. While accepting her step down, President Biden emphasized that he respected her accomplishments and experience and looked forward to seeing her serve in his administration. Neera Tanden previously served as Senior Health Advisor, Health Reforms, at the US Department of Health and Human Services. She also worked with Congress and other key stakeholders on several provisions of former President Barack Obama’s most memorable legislative achievement, the Affordable Care Act. Neera is a graduate of the University of California and holds a law degree from Yale Law School.
