Coimbatore: A 46-year-old servant has been convicted of stealing gold ornaments weighing 54 sovereigns and a diamond ring from a house in Dr. Munusamy Nagar Extension at Ramanathapuram in the city.
Police from the Ramanathapuram investigation wing formed a special squad to catch the maid, who was identified as Vinitha, from Salem.
An investigator said the woman worked as a maid at the home of MS Rajasekar, 46, at Dr Munusamy Nagar Extension. “He runs an IT business in town, while his wife is a teacher at a private college. On Monday, they were about to attend a family reception. When they opened an office, they were shocked to find that the gold and diamond ornaments were missing. They checked the whole house for missing gold and diamond, but to no avail.
Rajasekar filed a complaint with Ramanathapuram Investigation Wing Police Inspector S Senthilkumar stating that they suspected Vinitha’s role in the robbery.
He said the maid was cleaning the house while his whole family was away in his hometown of Devakottai for three days from January 23 to celebrate the first anniversary of his mother’s death.
“Vinitha suddenly stopped working for them and turned off her cell phones.
Therefore, Rajasekar and his family suspect his role in the theft. We have registered a case against Vinitha under Section 381 (Theft by a Registrar or Attendant of Property in Possession of Matter) of the Indian Penal Code and formed a task force,” the officer said.
He said that Vinitha had worked at Rajasekar for a few months and was staying at a rental house in Ramanathapuram. “Her whereabouts are unknown and efforts are underway to find her.”
