It was the ultimate horror and betrayal of trust for a woman who caught her domestic helper having sex with a man in her home on Sunday (September 11).

The man was later arrested by police at the four-bedroom flat of Stomp contributor Shalini at block 107A Canberra Street.

Shalini, who lives with her husband and four-year-old son, said the maid had been with them for three years and she never thought something like this could happen in her own home.

She told Stomp: “Normally there would be people around all the time. My husband works from home but that day he had to run some errands and I was visiting the temple.

“When I woke up in the morning and before I went out, I told my maid to sleep as it was her day off. However, she literally slept with another man.”

All hell broke loose after Shalini returned from the temple around 11.45am.

She said, “I entered my house after visiting the temple. I noticed that the door to my master bedroom was closed and I heard loud noises coming from there.

“I was appalled when my housekeeper came out to apologize to me in Tamil. She kept saying ‘Akka (sister), I’m sorry, I’m sorry’.

“I immediately screamed as I knew there was another person in the room. I saw a stranger getting dressed and was so devastated when he came out of my master bedroom about three minutes later .

“I cried because it was the first emotion I had: betrayal.

“I held the door because I didn’t want them to escape. I was so distressed that I couldn’t remember what number to call the police. I was so shocked, appalled, stunned and shaking.”

The Stomp contributor finally managed to call her husband, who was just five minutes away.

For Shalini, the incident was exceptionally hurtful and shocking as she always treated her maid “like family”.

The domestic helper, who comes from India, has every Sunday off and receives a monthly salary of 700 dollars.

“My maid had been with me for almost three years and I couldn’t believe this happened at my house,” Shalini explained.

“I had trusted her so much all this time. She was good at her job, whether it was general chores or looking after my son, like picking him up from school.

“I treated her like family and would even buy her the same clothes. I think I made a mistake there, being too lenient because that’s my nature.”

Shalini said her maid and the man had been seeing each other for “a while”, adding, “I confiscated both of their phones and saw countless videos of them being sexually active every week.”

She showed Stomp texts between the couple. There were also several photos of them hugging, kissing and behaving intimately.

However, Shalini thinks this is the first time her maid has been cheeky enough to bring the man home.

She explained: “There are usually people at home all the time, especially the last two years due to the pandemic.

“My maid usually sleeps in the common room on a mattress. She doesn’t come into the master bedroom on normal days. Why couldn’t they have gone to the hotel or had a room somewhere else?

“The police came and arrested the man for unlawful trespassing. I’m grateful they acted quickly instead of meditating and letting him go.

“I was shocked when the police pulled out a nice pair of silver handcuffs and put them on the man because I didn’t expect them.”

According to Shalini, the man was taken to the police station. Shalini and her husband also had to come down to make their statements.

The Stomp contributor said: “I booked a flight and fired my maid at 8pm the same day. It was expensive but I didn’t care. I just wanted to get rid of her.

“I want to thank the police. The moment I saw the man being arrested, I felt like a real blue Singaporean and was happy to have the protection of the law.

“I’m sharing this because I want people to know that if this happens in your household, you can count on the police. The police are there to help.”

In response to a query from Stomp, police said they received a call for help at 11:46 a.m. and arrested a 31-year-old man for willful trespassing.

Police investigations are ongoing.

When asked what her next steps are or if she plans to find a new domestic helper, Shalini told Stomp, “I’m not ready yet because the trauma is still fresh. What happened that day that still comes to mind.

“It was such a betrayal of trust.”
