A 36-year-old mother-of-four, Ms Opeyemi Omoyemi, has been arraigned in a magistrate’s court in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, for allegedly inflicting bodily harm on her 12-year-old housekeeper identified as Joel Sunday.

Omoyemi, a widow, was charged with five counts of attempted murder, child abuse, violence against people, banning, among others.

The accused allegedly used a stick and a razor blade to inflict multiple injuries on the body of the housekeeper, whom she accused of stealing pieces of meat from the pot.

The prosecutor, Emmanuel Tanimowo, indicated that the accused committed the offense on February 6, 2022, at his home located in Idimango Adewale axis of the Ondo road in Akure.

He informed the court that the crime was reported to the police by a Mrs Alice Ayedun, a community health worker, after seeing the boy writhing in pain with blood pouring from various parts of his body.

However, the accused pleaded guilty to three counts and not guilty to count three.

Catherine Ogunjebi, who held a brief for the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), urged the court to commit the defendant to a correctional facility.

However, defense attorney Gbenga Allen appealed to the magistrate to temper justice with mercy as the accused was a first-time offender.

Following the solicitor’s prayers, the magistrate, Mrs OA Edwin, adjourned for sentencing and trial until February 14. The magistrate also ordered that the accused’s children be taken to the children’s home for safekeeping.
